One of two successful OAO satellites, Stargazer confirmed the presence of clouds of hydrogen around comets and provided ultraviolet observations of stars, which Earth's atmosphere mostly blocks from ground-based observatories.
The development of Stargazer's pointing system, which aligned the telescope to a target for about half an hour, contributed to the development of similar systems for the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory, Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and other space-based telescopes.
