NASA's scientific balloons have a diameter larger than a football field and rise at about 305 meters (1,000 feet) per minute to altitudes as high as 49,000 meters (160,000 feet)—about four times the maximum cruising altitude of an airplane.
NASA's Scientific Balloon Program launches an average of 10-15 flights per year, carrying telescopes and other equipment above the clouds for extended periods to observe the sun, the solar system, distant galaxy clusters, and other celestial objects.
Nancy Grace Roman, the agency's first Chief of Astronomy, set up NASA's Scientific Balloon Program.
