In the 1970s, Rubin and collaborator Kent Ford revealed that galaxies rotate in a way only explainable by vast amounts of unseen mass, now called dark matter.
As a child, Rubin became fascinated by astronomy through watching stars move across the sky at night, and built her own telescope.
Her physics teacher discouraged her from pursuing science, though she studied astronomy at Cornell after graduating from Vassar and later earned her PhD from Georgetown.
