Distinguishing between Android and Linux-based operating systems
The Google-owned OS for mobile devices runs atop a Linux-based kernel that manages core services and manages software communication with hardware. While many Linux distributions can often be installed on these devices, Android uses its own standard libraries, user interface, and other open-source software, which comprise the Android Open Source Project.
