Richard Allen founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1794 after he was pulled from his knees during prayer

Born into slavery, Richard Allen left St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church when he and other Black congregants faced segregation and discrimination. He then established Bethel AME Church, which became the first congregation of one of the oldest and largest Black denominations in the world.
