Patients are messaging their doctors online more than ever—recent research suggests portal messages have risen by 157% since 2020.

The high volume of patient portal messages can contribute to physician burnout because they can add more hours onto their already busy day. Each message is associated with more than two additional minutes doctors must spend on electronic medical records.
Doctors suggest it's useful to think of patient portal messages as somewhat similar to text messages. That means the tone will not be apparent, and patients shouldn't ask anything too complicated, as those issues are better addressed in person.
Physicians urge patients not to send multiple messages about the same issue, and to expect that it may take as long as a few days to respond to a non-urgent medical question. Urgent medical questions should not be left on patient portals.
