There have been numerous theories speculating where the expression came from, including an apocryphal story about the psychiatric hospital found in left field of the Chicago Cubs' old stadium, West Side Park.
Interestingly, the term began appearing in Massachusetts newspapers in 1919, 15 years before anywhere else in the country, leading some researchers to conclude that it originated there.
It was first used in a non-baseball story that same year by the Lowell Sun; Lowell, Massachusetts, is home to Spalding Park, which was being used by minor league club the Lowell Grays in 1919.
Spalding Park had a short right field (just 276 feet) but an extraordinarily deep left field (330 feet), which extended into an undeveloped wooded area.
Researchers believe the setup might've led to the expression, with the deep, unencumbered left field acting as a metaphor for those not bound by social norms.
