In 1820, a sperm whale sank a ship and inspired 'Moby-Dick'

The Essex's crew hoped to capture sperm oil, a lucrative material found in the heads of sperm whales. However, a whale charged and crashed into the ship. Survivors of the attack drifted at sea for months, and many experienced starvation, dehydration, and cannibalism. The ordeal inspired author Herman Melville.
