How electrical transformers use coils of conductive wire to change voltage levels

Two sets of wires are wrapped around a magnetic core, each a different number of times. As alternating current flows through one wire, it generates a changing magnetic field that induces an alternating current in the second wire. If the second wire has fewer coils, the voltage steps down—decreases. If the second wire has more coils, the voltage steps up.
