The US Army sent fruit flies into space in 1947 aboard a captured German V-2 rocket, making them the first living organisms intentionally launched into space.
A Soviet mixed-breed dog named Laika became the first animal to orbit Earth in 1957, but died in space shortly after.
The first ape in space was designated only "Number 65" rather than given a name, due to concerns that he might not survive the mission and that NASA did not want the public to become emotionally attached to him.
Ape "Number 65" successfully returned to Earth on January 31, 1961, and was named Ham upon his arrival.
