Art historians Beth Harris and Steven Zucker note that Cassatt's angle forces us to look down at the figures, something her contemporary Degas also did, which was intended to be more realistic than a more standard portrait.
Harris notes that the patterning speaks to the influence Japanese prints had on Cassatt.
