Nazaré sits on Portugal's west coast and regularly sees waves reaching its shore from the Atlantic Ocean between 80 and 100 feet
While many factors play a role, the immense waves are primarily due to the Nazaré canyon. The 140-mile-long rift runs straight at the coast, and reaches a maximum depth of 16,000 feet
Waves in the deep water travel faster than the waves in the shallow water, effectively concentrating the energy in the central part of the wavefront
Other factors, including an abrupt shallow shoal and wind patterns, can also contribute to increasing wave size
German surfer Sebastian Steudtner set the world record for the largest wave ever surfed (86 feet) at Nazaré's Praia do Norte
