Tenochtitlan was the capital city and religious center of the Aztec civilization, founded in the 14th century on an island near the western shore of Lake Texcoco in central Mexico, in present-day Mexico City.
At its largest, the city covered some 12-14 square kilometers and was connected to the surrounding mainland by three causeways, with a stone aqueduct bringing fresh water from nearby springs.
The city was destroyed in 1521 by Spanish forces led by Hernán Cortés, bringing about the final collapse of the Aztec Empire.
