  1. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, a once-in-a-lifetime requirement for all able Muslims, with origins dating back to Abraham in biblical times and formalized by the Prophet Muhammad in 632 CE.

  2. Pilgrims wear plain white clothing, symbolizing equality before God, stripping away all visible markers of class, wealth, and nationality.

  3. Mina, Saudi Arabia, where pilgrims spend the first night, is known as the "city of tents" because 100,000 white tents are erected to house the millions of pilgrims.

  4. The most sacred ritual of the Hajj is the Day of Arafah, where pilgrims gather on the plains of Mount Arafat to spend the afternoon in prayer and repentance.

  5. The pilgrimage ends back in Mecca with a final circling of the Kaaba, Islam's holiest site, believed to have been built by the Prophet Abraham by God's command.
