Both Cassatt and Degas disliked the term "Impressionists"; they preferred "Independents."
Cassatt began experimenting with metallic paints and encouraged Degas to do the same, which he did with 1879's"Portrait After a Costume Ball."
The relationship came to an end for unknown reasons—some say it was due to the dissolution of their shared journal, while others speculate there was a failed romantic relationship.
