Only 2% of human DNA codes for proteins
The entire human genome contains about 20,000 protein-coding genes, with the rest having initially been categorized as "junk" DNA. However, research since 2003 suggests that this "dark genome" regulates how protein-coding genes are expressed in response to environmental factors encountered by cells.
