Additional insights we found via this resource

  1. There is a phlebotomist shortage in the US, and a single phlebotomist can oversee up to three of the approved Aletta blood-draw robots simultaneously.

  2. Aletta is the first standalone robotic device, and the FDA authorized its use only under the oversight of a human trained in phlebotomy.

  3. The actual procedure can be completely handled by the device. It first instructs the patient to position their arm correctly, and then the patient or human supervisor presses a button to start the blood draw. Next, the device uses near-infrared light and Doppler ultrasound to identify a suitable vein and distinguish it from nearby arteries, and the device applies disinfectant to the area.

  4. The device will not attempt the procedure if no appropriate vein is found. It also automatically stops trying to initiate the blood draw if the patient moves too much.

  5. Research with the device found that 90% patients reported far less (19%), less (32%), or similar pain (39%) compared with manual phlebotomy.
