In 1992, 79-year-old Stella Liebeck spilled McDonald’s coffee in her lap, which burned 16% of her body, 6% of which was considered to be third-degree.
After her medical bills totaled about $10K, Liebeck sought compensation from McDonald’s, but the company only offered her $800.
McDonald’s refusal to compensate more of Liebeck’s medical costs prompted a lawsuit, grounded by the claim that the coffee was so hot it presented an unreasonable danger to consumers.
While many headlines reported that Liebeck won more than $2M in damages, Liebeck actually received less than $700K, as the judge had adjusted the value of her settlement.
For years, the sticker shock created by the misleading value of her award became a lightning rod for criticism of the American legal system.
