Between 1989 and 2001, a security guard dubbed 'Uncle Jerry' rigged the McDonald's Monopoly sweepstakes by handing out 60 winning pieces worth more than $24M.

Findings

Additional insights we found via The Compendium

  1. Jerry Jacobson, the security director for the marketing firm that ran the sweepstakes, disseminated winning game pieces in exchange for cash kickbacks.

  2. Jacobson met Gennaro Colombo, a member of the Colombo crime family, at the airport in 1995. That meeting led to a years-long partnership to disseminate winning pieces.

  3. More than 50 people were convicted of the fraud, but many of the prize winners had their convictions overturned after appealing, claiming they were tricked by Jacobson.

  4. Jacbson got about three years in prison and was ordered to pay back $12.5M.

  5. In an effort to maintain his reputation if he was ever caught, Jacobson sent a $1M game piece to St. Jude’s Hospital in TN, which McDonald’s honored as a donation even after the scandal came to light.
