Additional insights we found via Smithsonian Magazine

  1. Forced to drop out of school as a teenager, Pecora ultimately got a job as a law clerk before passing the New York bar exam and becoming one of the few first-generation Italian-American lawyers in New York City.

  2. His early career was spent shutting down more than 100 illegal brokerage houses, laying the foundation for his later career in financial regulation.

  3. Many expected Pecora to become the first chairman of the newly created Securities and Exchange Commission, but President Franklin D. Roosevelt instead appointed Joseph Kennedy.

  4. In 1935, Pecora was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court. He later ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of New York City in 1950.
