Boesky made millions by trading on illegal tips and private information in exchange for suitcases full of cash.
The infamous "greed is good" monologue in Oliver Stone’s "Wall Street" was inspired by an actual commencement speech Boesky gave at the University of California, Berkeley, where he told students that greed is healthy.
When Boesky was arrested, he was shockingly cooperative with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He agreed to wear a wire and provided the agency with a wealth of evidence to take down other infamous white-collar criminals, including junk bond king Michael Milken.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, many of the stringent financial reforms that emerged from the stock market crash of 1929 were eased or hardly enforced, creating a wave of high-level financial crimes.
