Prior to starting BlackRock, Fink led the fixed-income department at First Boston and famously lost $100M in one quarter due to the company’s poor risk-assessment processes.
Fink’s staggering losses at First Boston exposed the industry’s poor understanding of risk, prompting him to create a firm with a core focus on risk management.
At first, BlackRock was called Blackstone Financial Management, and the asset manager was a subsidiary of Blackstone.
In 1992, Fink began pushing for operational independence from Blackstone and renamed the firm BlackRock. The name was intentionally similar to Blackstone to indicate that the two companies were, at the time, in the same family.
Fink wanted to dilute Schwarzman’s 35% ownership stake to issue more stock options in order to attract better talent and grow the company, but Schwarzman was deeply opposed to letting go of his equity.
By 1994, Schwarzman had sold the stake to Pittsburgh National Corporation (PNC) for more than $240M.
Schwarzman and Fink shared a contentious relationship leading up to the ultimate sale and have characterized the deal as a "bitter divorce."
