Despite meeting as ambulance drivers in WWI, Ray Kroc and Walt Disney weren't the driving forces behind McDonald's and Disney's numerous business partnerships.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Defunctland

  1. Kroc and Disney, both from Illinois, were in the same group of Red Cross ambulance drivers in 1918. Both had lied about their ages to be eligible for the position.

  2. When deciding where to open the first McDonald’s franchise, Kroc asked Disney if it could go in a then-early-stage Disney theme park. Allegedly, the request was shot down, and Kroc opened in Illinois.

  3. Kroc claimed that the original McDonald’s never opened a Disneyland location because Disney wanted to raise the price of fries from 10 cents to 15 cents, and Kroc didn’t approve.

  4. After Kroc’s death in 1984, McDonald’s and Disney collaborated on numerous cross-promotional events—including its Splash Mountain-themed sweepstakes.

  5. Following growing concerns about childhood obesity and publicity surrounding "Super Size Me" in 2004, Disney stopped its promotional relationship with McDonald's.
