The team—including Ed Catmull, one of the eventual founders of Pixar—was hired by Lucasfilm, the production company responsible for "Star Wars," in 1979 and designed the Pixar Image Computer.
George Lucas' divorce caused severe cuts at Lucasfilm; the inventors of the Pixar Image Computer bought the technology from the company thanks to an investment from Steve Jobs, who'd recently been ousted from Apple.
Pixar developed a computer animation system for Disney, which the studio first used for 1989's "The Little Mermaid."
Pixar made its first fully animated feature film with 1995's "Toy Story," which was a massive hit and the first fully computer-generated film to win an Academy Award.
