  1. Although MIT built the first 3D graphics system with the Whirlwind, a flight simulator for the US Navy, today's GPUs descend from the video shifters and video address generators of the 1970s, which carried information from the central processing unit to the display.

  2. In the 1980s and 1990s, companies such as IBM, ATI Technologies, S3 Graphics, and Nvidia developed technologies for color displays, 2D acceleration, and software to better integrate graphics hardware with CPUs.

  3. The emergence of 3D graphics spurred the development of modern GPUs, as manufacturers created hardware that could independently handle multiple data streams in parallel, rather than processing what was offloaded from the CPU.

  4. Nvidia's release of CUDA in 2007 transformed GPUs from graphics processors into general-purpose parallel processors, enabling their use in industries beyond gaming.
