During microchip production, silicon wafers are fabricated into multiple copies of the same component, which are then sorted, or binned, into different product tiers based on whether they meet specific performance thresholds during testing.
Rather than discarding entire chips with some defective elements, including cores or memory controllers, manufacturers can fuse off or disable these components to ensure the chip operates safely, allowing it to be sold as a lower-tier, less expensive product.
While not recommended, in cases where components are disabled, it may be possible to re-enable them and gain additional processing capability beyond what was advertised.
