As part of his research in the early 2000s, Ian Buck, a doctoral candidate at Stanford University, developed Brook, the programming language that enabled this transformation, and would eventually become Compute Unified Device Architecture at Nvidia.
Before CUDA, only about 10% of Nvidia's graphics processing units were programmable—most of the microchip was designed to perform fixed functions.
