While atoms are normally made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, exotic ones have been built with antimatter—alternate versions of normal matter that live for fractions of a second and are about a billion times as rare.

Additional insights we found via SciShow

  1. In normal matter, the electromagnetic force attracts negatively charged electrons to positively charged protons in the nucleus to form atoms.

  2. The same force can be used to make exotic atoms that contain antimatter—oppositely charged versions of normal matter particles.

  3. In muonium, an electron is paired with an antimuon—a short-lived antimatter version of an electron with a positive charge.

  4. Antimatter particles like antimuons can be created in high-energy collisions within a particle accelerator and controlled using electromagnetic fields.
