The virus was coded to copy itself from an infected floppy disk to Apple II operating systems, then spread to any floppy disks inserted into infected machines
Starting with the 10th boot, the virus would cause various annoying behaviors on every 5th boot that required a reboot to resolve, such as inverted or flashing on-screen text.
On the 50th boot of an infected machine, infected machines would display the Elk Cloner poem, and on the 79th boot, the boot counter would reset.
