The July 12, 1979, event was hosted by Chicago rock DJ Steve Dahl, who encouraged attendees to bring disco records, which he'd burn in between games of that day's doubleheader.
That season had particularly low attendance, leading the White Sox to double-book promotions: Along with "Disco Demolition Night," it was also "Teen Night," which offered discounted admission for teens, leading to an estimated crowd of nearly 50,000, well over the stadium's 44,492-person capacity.
The crowd was raucous throughout the first game, with some throwing items onto the field, leading to several stoppages in play.
Dahl eventually blew up a crate of records on the field between games, but attendees rushed the field shortly afterward, with an estimated 7,000 people on the field for 40 minutes, causing substantial damage and a bonfire in center field.
Disco was primarily produced by Black, Latino, and queer artists, something critics have noted likely led to such a serious cultural backlash to the music's rising popularity; Dahl claimed there was no bigotry behind his anti-disco demonstration.
