Celebrations for America's 150th birthday in 1926 were a poorly organized mess that nearly bankrupted the host city of Philadelphia.

Additional insights we found via Smithsonian Magazine

  1. The Sesquicentennial International Exposition, held between May 31 and December 31, 1926, was authorized by Congress, making it the official celebration of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

  2. Poor planning, middling early reviews, and bad weather led to an underwhelming celebration: Organizers estimated 30 million visitors, but by the fair's conclusion, fewer than 5 million paid attendees had attended.

  3. One of its biggest attractions was an 80-foot-tall replica of the Liberty Bell, which included 26,000 light bulbs that produced a nightly spectacle.

  4. The fair lost the modern equivalent of over $410M, leading Variety magazine to call it "America's greatest flop."
