Findings

Additional insights we found via 60 Minutes

  1. The Archives holds about 13.5 billion paper records, enough film to wrap around the globe three and a half times, millions of photographs, and over 700,000 artifacts.

  2. These records and artifacts are stored across dozens of facilities, including four underground cave complexes in the Midwest.

  3. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution didn't arrive at the Archives' Washington rotunda until 1952; they had been held by the Library of Congress, which refused to turn them over until President Truman intervened.

  4. The Archives also holds some unexpected records of American history, including the Louisiana Purchase signed by Napoleon, the check Russia cashed when the US bought Alaska for $7.2 million, and the deed of gift that accompanied the Statue of Liberty.
