The day after the vote, John Adams wrote to his wife that July 2 "will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America" and predicted it would be celebrated as a great annual festival by future generations.
Congress then spent July 3 and most of July 4 revising Jefferson's declaration, formally adopting the final wording on the afternoon of July 4, the date printed on the document.
The Declaration was first read publicly on July 8, most delegates signed it on August 2, and July 4 didn't become a federal holiday until 1870.
