Heinrich Miller's Pennsylvania State-Courier scooped every English-language competitor on July 5, 1776, reporting that Congress had declared the colonies "free and independent states."
Miller also published the first full German-language translation of the Declaration on July 9, 1776, allowing German Pennsylvanians, who made up nearly half the colony's population, to read it in their native language.
When the British occupied Philadelphia in 1777, they accused Miller of working for Benjamin Franklin and forced him into hiding for several months.
Miller had gotten his start in the printing business at age 13 and worked across Europe before emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1741, where he found his first American job at Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette.
