Franklin began printing money as early as the 1730s and is believed to have printed millions of pounds worth of bills.
Since he was already an established printer in Philadelphia, Franklin helped establish printing networks in other colonies by supplying them with paper and ink to print notes.
New analysis of more than 600 notes printed by Franklin shows the use of a special black ink that didn’t smudge as easily as the soot-based ink of the time, helping prevent fraud.
Some of the notes Franklin printed also contained mica particles, giving the bills a certain sheen to verify their legitimacy.
