The US lacked a national anthem for the first 8 Olympics, with 'The Star-Spangled Banner' technically an unofficial anthem until 1931.

Additional insights we found via The Saturday Evening Post

  1. Although songs like “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” were informal anthems, the country did not have an official national anthem.

  2. In 1916, Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order that stated "The Star-Spangled Banner" should be played when it was appropriate for a national anthem, but stopped short of designating it as the official anthem.

  3. That changed in 1931, when President Herbert Hoover signed a bill into law designating the song as the national anthem.
