When they stood on the winner's podium while the national anthem played, the athletes raised their fists, mirroring a popular Black Power gesture; the gesture led to some controversy, with some saying it was disrespectful.
Tommie Smith did not regret the act, saying, "It was Black dignity, and I'm proud I have done it."
