The lyrics were written by James Weldon Johnson—a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and an architect of the Harlem Renaissance, the 20th-century Black arts movement—for a celebration of Lincoln's birthday in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1900.
In time, it was unofficially referred to as "The Nego National Hymn" and, eventually, "The Black National Anthem."
The song has been performed before major sporting events and at presidential inaugurations.
