Juneteenth celebrates the day that the last enslaved people were notified of the Emancipation Proclamation, 2 years after it was signed.

Additional insights we found via PBS

  1. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, legally ending chattel slavery in the Confederate states, but word did not reach enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, until June 19, 1865, two months after the Union had won the Civil War.

  2. The announcement effectively ended slavery in Texas, and celebrations broke out in response, which were unofficially the first Juneteenth celebrations.

  3. The holiday has since been celebrated in the US annually, sometimes under different names, including Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Jubilee Day.

  4. In 1980, Texas became the first state to celebrate Juneteenth as an official holiday.

  5. In 2021, Juneteenth was made a federal holiday.
