Opal Lee originally planned to walk the entire 1,400 miles, but her family, concerned about her old age, convinced her to instead take symbolic 2.5-mile walks in major cities en route to the nation's capital.
She embarked on the journey in September 2016, at 89, and finally completed it on January 10, 2017.
Lee said she has an attachment to the date because her home was burned to the ground on that day in 1939 by a racist mob.
