Formerly enslaved people in Houston purchased a plot of land in Houston in 1872 so they could have a place to celebrate Juneteenth.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Voices of the Civil Rights Movement

  1. John “Henry” Jack Yates, Richard Brock, Richard Allen, and David Elias Dibble purchased 10 square acres of land to allow Black residents to celebrate the holiday, eventually calling it "Emancipation Park."

  2. "Emancipation Park" was the first public park in both Houston and Texas and, during the Jim Crow era, was the only public park available for Black residents.
