The first Juneteenth was June 19, 1865, the day that General Order 3 was delivered to enslaved people in Galveston, Texas; Black residents commemorated the occasion the next year with an "Emancipation Celebration" on January 1, 1866.
By the late 1870s, the holiday was celebrated on June 19 and had spread to other parts of the country, likely by Galveston residents who'd moved away during the Great Migration.
