Key may now be known for his poetry, but he entered the War of 1812 as a renowned lawyer in Frederick, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
After the war, he was nominated by President Andrew Jackson to serve as District Attorney for Washington, D.C., a position he held from 1833 to 1841.
