The week after Key wrote it, “Defence of Fort M’Henry” was published in the Baltimore Patriot newspaper and appeared in papers across the US.
Eventually, Thomas Carr, a Baltimore musician, published sheet music for the song and changed its name to “The Star-Spangled Banner," a reference to the nickname for the enormous flag that was flown at Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore.
