The phrase decorated his acoustic guitars, sometimes painted across the instrument's body and sometimes written on a small note taped to it.
Deana McCloud, executive director of the Woody Guthrie Center, notes that he repurposed the phrase from war machinery because he saw his art as an extension of the war effort against international fascism, especially during World War II.
During World War II, Guthrie enlisted in the Merchant Marines, which is where he likely saw the phrase for the first time.
Contemporary artists, including Jack White and Julien Baker, have mimicked the phrase on their guitars, often putting their own spin on it.
