The album, originally recorded in 1940, was partially inspired by Guthrie's own experiences, including witnessing "Black Sunday," the severe dust storm of April 14, 1935, while living in Pampa, Texas.
John Steinbeck's 1939 Dust Bowl novel "The Grapes of Wrath" also had a major impact on Guthrie.
Steinbeck would later praise Guthrie, saying, "I think we call this the American spirit."
The recording was the first commercial release of Guthrie's career and would go on to be the most financially successful.
"Dust Bowl Ballads," which features only acoustic guitar and Guthrie's singing, has been cited as a key influence on Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer, and many others.
