Guthrie was annoyed by the sentimentality and religiosity of Irving Berlin's song—a recording featuring Kate Smith was especially popular on the radio in the late 1930s—and initially called it "God Blessed America for Me."
Guthrie wrote the lyrics in 1940 and repurposed the melody from the Carter Family's 1930 recording of "When the World's on Fire"; this was typical in the folk music tradition, and Guthrie's friend and fellow songwriter Pete Seeger said that Guthrie sought out melodies that were already popular.
The song became popular through live performances, and its simplicity made it easily memorized by adults and children alike.
The song was recorded in 1944 and included two controversial verses condemning private property and portraying government assistance that were eventually removed from another version that was released in 1951.
