The history of real-life crime magazines

Before podcasts and streaming services, details of true crime cases could be found smushed between glossy magazine pages. "True Detective Mysteries," a magazine of fictional crime retellings that debuted in 1924, quickly pivoted to sharing detailed reporting of real criminal cases after seeing what drove sales. Rebranding itself as "True Detective," the magazine launched dozens of imitators and only shut down publishing in January 2024.
