Steinbeck's novel 'The Grapes of Wrath' was inspired by a series of newspaper reports he wrote about migrant farm workers.

  1. In 1936, Steinbeck wrote seven dispatches for the San Francisco News, reporting on migrant farm workers in California.

  2. Those dispatches would provide the historical grounding (and some character sketches) for "The Grapes of Wrath," which fictionalized the migrant experience through the Joad family, who flee Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl.
