A book series aimed at World War II soldiers helped popularize works like 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Of Mice and Men.'

Additional insights we found via Library of Congress

  1. Between 1943 and 1947, nearly 123 million copies of American Services Edition paperbacks were distributed to soldiers free of charge.

  2. The editions were designed to easily fit into soldiers' jacket pockets and then be discarded.

  3. One of the program's biggest success stories was F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," whose Armed Services Edition led to a surge in popularity 20 years after its original publication.

  4. Wallace Stegner, author of "The Big Rock Candy Mountain," said, “The paperback revolution that followed owed an incalculable debt to the Armed Services Editions.”
